Pawn to D5, Bishop to G6, Rook to Take White Knight… CHECK!

Pawn to D5, Bishop to G6, Rook to take white knight… CHECK! - Chess Tournament

On Wednesday 17th April, BSG held the second Nord Anglia Chess Tournament, inviting schools from around Guangzhou to compete against each other.

Ten eager Year 6 students competed phenomenally, against worthy opponents, many of which were much older secondary students, to complete a gruelling 12 matches. People may not think of chess players as athletes, but after 3 hours of solid concentration, tactics and strategies, I would have to disagree. These competitors were champions, mentally and physically. I was particularly proud of all our Y6 students, as this was not only their first chess competition, but also the first time ever of playing with a timer – adding immense pressure on their game.

We had two BSG Primary teams playing against 15 other teams. The final scores were unbelievably close, with only 3 points separating the top 4 teams. BSG Primary Team 2 placed 4th with 37.5 points and BSG Team 1 placed 2nd with 38.5 points – it really couldn’t have been closer. It was also great that the 1st place went to one of our BSG Secondary teams, with 40.5 points (told you it was close!)

Huge congratulations for superb sportsmanship, dedication and impeccable representation of BSG to all our students!
