After introducing the wonderful story Old Bear, the children dove deeply into learning about how toys are made, the history of toys, and the different materials used to create them.
Each child eagerly shared their favourite toy during a show and tell session. As part of our home learning, Year 1 families were also asked to share what their favourite toys were when they were children, which sparked lots of meaningful conversations.
The children were then introduced to the skills needed to make both a fabric stuffed toy and a wooden toy. They have been learning to sew, hammer, stuff, saw, smooth, cut, and drill, using a variety of real tools.
After creating their own designs and choosing their materials, the children have now begun crafting their toys in class. It has been wonderful to see their ideas come to life. We have been especially impressed with their focus and commitment, even when they found parts of the process challenging and said, “this is hard.”
We are looking forward to seeing the finished toys soon, which the children will proudly take home to enjoy.
