Annie Phan, Class of 2016 alumna: from Ivy League success to pursuing her passion for AI in New York

Making her mark in Artificial Intelligence

Currently based in New York - one of the world’s most dynamic centres for technology and finance, Annie Phan, a BVIS Class of 2016 alumna, is building her career in data transformation, data science and artificial intelligence (AI) at global-scale corporations. 

After completing her higher education at Brown University in 2021, Annie joined McKinsey & Company as a consultant, where she worked on data and AI transformation projects across multiple industries. 

She then took on a technical leadership roles at Fanatics, leading enterprise-scale digital transformation initiatives, before running the AI Solution Architect team at Diligent, a leading global provider of governance, risk, and compliance SaaS solutions for Fortune 500 companies. At this company, Annie leads the development of AI applications and workflows that increase value add, efficiency, and save costs for different business functions of the company. 

Beyond her professional work, Annie is an active thought leader in the AI community through authoring publications, speaking at conferences, judging competitions, and mentoring young professions and seasoned executives in AI transformation for business empowerment. Some of the events she has spoken at include Velric’s AI Hiring and Leadership Summit 2026 and Break into Tech’s Applied AI for Data Leaders. As a result of these initiatives, Annie was invited to become a member of exclusive tech and AI community for leaders in the field, such as Forbes Business Council, AI Think Tank, a and Angel Squad of Hustle Fund. 

In recognition of her achievements and contributions in artificial intelligence and data science to the U.S. economy, Annie has been awarded the O-1 visa by the United States Government, granted to individuals with extraordinary ability in their field.

Before building her career in the United States, Annie pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and International Development at Brown University, before continuing to complete her Master’s degree in Data Science at this prestigious Ivy League institution.

During the 2016 university admissions cycle, Annie received multiple offers from top universities worldwide, including two Ivy League universities, Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as leading universities such as UC BerkeleyUCLAUniversity of Southern CaliforniaThe University of VirginiaTulane UniversityAmerican University, and several universities in the United Kingdom.

Annie’s journey began in 2012 at BVIS HCMC, where she was among the school’s earliest students and was awarded a full-ride scholarship for her four-year studies by the founders, Mr Maurice Nguyen and Mrs Rosie Nguyen. 

Throughout her time at BVIS, Annie achieved excellent academic results, including A grades in Mathematics, Chemistry, Economics, and English Literature at A Level, supported by a strong IGCSE foundation with A and A* grades across multiple subjects.

Beyond academics, Annie demonstrated strong leadership as she was elected Student Council President in her first year. She also co-founded Silver Lining Vietnam, a non-profit organisation aimed at expanding access to education and technology for underserved communities. 

Through this initiative, Annie led and contributed that empower and support students across the country in further education, including teaching English, organising extracurricular activities, fundraising book donations, and delivering technology education programmes for students in different Southern provinces.

Despite her busy international career, Annie has remained closely connected to BVIS HCMC. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she collaborated with BVIS students and her former teacher, Ms Thuy Do, Head of Vietnamese, to expand the Silver Lining initiative, delivering English and IT programmes to support underprivileged students across various provinces. 

“I’ve always wanted to stay connected and contribute to the BVIS community by creating more opportunities for students,” Annie, Class of 2016, shared.
