Classroom News & Photos Year 6

05 September 2014

Week ending 5th September, 2014

Year 6 have enjoyed being role models this year, during their weekly sessions as ‘Reading Buddies’ with younger children. Each Wednesday afternoon we have been visiting the children in Years 1 and 2 to spend time reading their favourite books to them. Some of the books we have read include the ‘Gruffalo’, ‘Fox in Socks’, ‘Dogger’ and ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’.

The Year 6 children have been very kind, caring and responsible when speaking with their younger ‘buddies’ and this session gives them the opportunity to practice their reading skills, such as fluency, volume, pace and expression. They have also learnt how to act as responsible role models.

The year 1 and 2 pupils gain a lot from these sessions too: listening to and talking about new stories, as well as learning about the older children in the school and following their behaviour. It is clear that they look forward to these sessions each week. As the year progresses we will allow the younger children to practise reading their allocated books to the Year 6 children, in order to develop their own reading ability
