Please find attached to this email our draft calendar for the next school year. Please do note that it is a draft (and especially we are making certain assumptions about days off school where a Chinese holiday falls at the weekend) – we will publish the final calendar as soon as possible but please do not make any firm arrangements on the basis of this draft until we do.
Setting the school calendar is always a difficult process, as we try to balance the needs of all our parents and students, and indeed their families and friends worldwide, whilst at the same time providing the best possible educational experience. There are a number of interesting points next year:
1. The National Holiday and Mid-Autumn festival are very close together indeed so it seems to make sense to combine them – even though this means a long holiday very close to the beginning of the autumn term;
2. The recommended Chinese New Year holiday is from 8-14 February, which coincides with a full school week, unlike the last two years when it has crossed two weeks. Although this means that we are proposing only nine days in total, this does match exactly the recommended Government holiday;
3. We have considered shifting the school year to be more in line with some other international schools i.e. an earlier start to the school year in autumn and an earlier finish in summer. Informal feedback from a number of parents in the past has suggested that they like the fact we are different but this debate can be reopened in the future. However, because of the way the holiday pattern works in 2015/16, we do not believe that this is the right year to make this change, if we ever do.
Please do let me know if you notice any errors or omissions, or if you have any strong views on the calendar – I intend to finalise the calendar as soon as possible so that parents can make holiday and other family plans.
