Dear BSB Sport Followers,

Our U15 FOBISIA team has returned back to Beijing from Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar (KTJ), Malaysia. Students have reported to us how much fun they had competing in 4 sports (Athletics/Swimming/Football/Basketball) over the 3 day tournament as well as all the additional things they did while on the trip. Well done to our teams and coaches for all the work they have done in preparations for these games. BSB is scheduled to host the 2016 U15 FOBISIA games, with the tentative dates of 16th to 18th November 2016. So stay posted as we finalize our school calendar for 2016-2017 academic year and confirm the U15 dates.

Now on to the U13’s, parents and all interested students who are trying out for U13 FOBISIA should be aware of the try-out schedule. Try-Outs begin the week of Monday 30th November and all will take place in regularly scheduled PE lessons for Y7/8. Please note the following times and days below for the specific sports. Students should have played football in Season 1 and competed in the School Sports Day. The team will be announced on Monday 7th December.

  • Yr7 Swimming on Monday 30th November
  • Yr7 Basketball on Thursday 3rd November
  • Yr8 Swimming on Tuesday 1st December
  • Yr8 Basketball on Friday 4th December

The ISAC U14/U13/U12 Volleyball Exchanges originally scheduled for 21st November but were cancelled due to worries with weather (snow) have been re-scheduled to 5th December. ISAC make up exchanges will be held at the following schools: U14 D1 boys @WAB, U14 D1 girls @BCIS, U13 boys @ISB, U13 girls @DCB. In the U12 division, BSB’s 3rd Annual 3 vs.3 mini-volleyball will take the place of the U12 Exchange for boys & girls. As I write this, this tournament has grown into one of the biggest days of volleyball with close to 30 teams confirmed on the boys’ side and 20 on the girls’ side. Over 200 students will be playing Volleyball from Year 7 & 6. This is a fantastic day and a great way to spark greater interest and development for our Volleyball programs at both BSB and ISAC as a whole.

On the sport and curriculum side, as everyone is aware, BSB built a state-of-the-art Early Years/Foundation Stage swimming pool over the summer. In the first part of the academic year, we have been using it for our Y1/2 swim program but as of last week we have formally began weekly swim lessons for all BSB Reception students. It is our aim to get Nursery started after Chinese New Year, and lastly our Teddies students in May. This would mean that every student in Foundation Stage will receive formal swim instruction while at BSB in addition to what we are currently offering for Key Stages 1/2/3/4.

This leads me into my next exciting update, that our Aquabears swim team has now reached the highest membership (over 150 BSB students) we have had in the 6 years I have been at this school. With the addition of our Foundation Stage pool, which to some degree feeds students into our Mini-Bears program for swimming U8, more and more students are swimming in the secondary school (3 times as many as 2014-2015) which has all lead to this growth. Not only have the numbers increased but also the quality of our swimmers, and their results at past Beijing meets has shown incredible progress in only 2 short years. The word in Beijing is that BSB is very serious about its swimming and all of the hard work is showing off. Great work to Mr. Ali Armstrong (alasdair.armstrong@britishschool.org.cn ) and his Aquatics and Aquabears teams! Stay posted as we finalize our 2016 ACAMIS swim squad which will travel to Suzhou in March for this year’s annual swim meet.

It seems like such a short time ago we were celebrating our ACAMIS Volleyball success in Season 1 with the boys winning their first ACAMIS Volleyball title but now we are in the process of finalizing/selecting our 10 boys and 10 girls who will travel to the International School of Nanshan, Shenzhen (ISNS) to play ACAMIS Basketball. Squads will all be confirmed by 11th of December with the Tournament taking place from January 28th through 30th.

It’s been another incredible busy Term for BSB sport. Like always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about sport or PE at BSB.
