The migrant school service team was divided into two groups in order to visit schools more frequently. Therefore, Team A which I am involved with, visited the migrant school this time with the Migrant Children’s Foundation (MCF) in Shunyi, Beijing. Recently we collected money and bought some stationary items for students involved in the MCF program as part of our IB CAS. We brought these gifts to the Migrant School and made poster for them as part of our service work. The students showed great creativity in their poster designs and were very happy with the gifts we bought the school.
For the first class, we taught them English during this lesson. During the lesson we taught them how to introduce their family members and themselves. In addition, colours and numbers were included as a review from our previous class. There were many students who were new and they have not learnt numbers and colours before. Now the students can introduce themselves in English and discuss their name, age, hobbies and families which made us satisfied that we helped them learn some basic phrases in English. Also one of my students said thank you to me for the assistance we provided her.
During break time, we played basketball with them especially with boys. With girls we talked about our families and some of the differences the migrant students face when living in a large city. It was nice talking to the migrant students during the break as we could see the students enjoying playing basketball and learning a new language.
For the last lesson, we gave the students a short presentation about what they learnt during the first lesson. In the beginning they were reluctant to do it and bit shy to go in front of the class and speak out loud. However, since we encouraged and helped them, they tried to join and practise their English and they become involved in this activity. More importantly they remembered our name once we did the same presentation with them. They called our name and answered back when we asked them about us in English.
Our trip to the migrant English school this time it was much more impressive than last time. Since there were fewer students than before, we could have more conversation with each of them and could teach them more than previous lessons. We could communicate more and teach the students more advanced vocabulary. Students who I helped before still come to me and ask me for help which is really pleasing, and they still remember me in a good way. Whenever, I do this service activity, I always forget that I am doing this for an IB CAS activity. This activity has given me the opportunity to plan and initiate an activity and to reflect on my personal experiences and an IB CAS student.
