Have we made it?
This is probably a question you will hear a million times today.
I can say that by all counts, yes, we did it – at least unofficially at this stage. We will send all our evidences to The Guinness World Record and they will inform us the official results soon.
Here are yesterday’s statistics:
- The current world record is 1000 pieces. We correctly solved 1538 equations involving 1997 puzzle pieces! (There was a total of 5200 pieces). Most of these were not connected to each other and exactly that is our sole cause for concern in the interpretation of the result
- These correctly solved equations by no means constitute all the maths done. Almost all single pieces we had to clear away before the counting had answers already written on them indicating that time was over before they could be matched up
- About 500 students and 15 teachers worked on the pieces for 7 hours
There are a few groups of people who deserve a special mentioning:
- Eli Puttock and her many ladies who were able to find independent people to invigilate the whole process and who pulled the strings behind the project;
- Colleen Usher, Matthew Taylor and Michael Koo who spend almost all day solving equations and managing the logistics;
- Those Y10 boys who spent their time cleaning up the Y13 mess (That’s right: Y10 students doing Y13 maths!!!);
- And then there is this Y10 group of Korean girls who worked 5 hours straight solving between them by far most of the equations. Half of the work you still see in the foyer is theirs; and
- All the subject teachers who gave up their lesson time so that we could try to set a world record.
Either way, with or without the title, this event has been an amazing display of all the values BSB tries to endorse: leadership, group work, persistence, academic rigour, and the ability to rub feet and back with people who one would otherwise avoid talking to.
