Year 8 STEAM Day

  • Year 8 STEAM

Year 8 had a whole day off timetable to explore a theme in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Students were asked to "Invent a device that makes life better for someone with an illness or a disability, a medical marvel". They worked in groups to develop a prototype to solve this question and a pitch to explain and sell their concept.

Students worked hard through the day to develop ideas, mock up models and develop a prototype. Each group had to create a video diary of the day and prepare a formal presentation to explain their prototype to a team of judges consisting of Mr Khan, Mr Wheeler, Mr Hardman and Mrs Frenkian (PA). The standard of work was high and judges eventually decided to select the diabetes watch as the winning concept. However the winner of the competition was Year 8A as they performed more consistently in each of the tasks and the range of outcomes through the day. Tutor group 8A won a non-uniform day as the reward.

Over the next few weeks a selection of videos edited and produced by the groups will be displayed in the Science and Technology Secondary corridor for all to enjoy. A great day was had by all and students developed their understanding of STEAM and its applications.
