I began my teaching career working with EFL students in Phuket as a young and eager traveller curious about life outside of my home country, South Africa. I fell in love working with young children and went on to study an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education through The University of South Africa, whilst working at an International pre-school in Hanoi. After I got my teaching degree, I moved to an IB school in Hanoi where I spent many years working as a classroom teacher in the early primary grades.

After 13 years in South East Asia, 2 in Phuket and 11 in Hanoi, my husband and I decided to move to Beijing. We arrived in July 2016 and have loved our time here so far. I took the first year to be at home with our daughter and work on a post graduate certificate in Educational Leadership through the University of Leicester. This is my third year teaching Year 1 at BSB, and my daughter is in Reception now.

I have worked in the education sector for 10 years in London, my home town. I started off working as a nursery nurse and discovered my love for working with children and I knew this was the perfect career choice for me. I then went on to working as a TA then a HLTA for the next 5 years where I also completed my degree in Education Studies at the University of East London and gained my Qualified Teacher Status at Schools Direct.

Once I was qualified, I then worked as a primary school teacher in a Newham school in East London for 3 years. Whilst working in London I obtained lots of experience, especially in special educational needs and EAL.  Although my roles have differed over time, it has given me great satisfaction in teaching different children, building relationships and playing a major role in each child’s academic development. I believe that the teaching profession is a rewarding and fulfilling job.

I began my teaching experience after graduating from an American university in 2004 and have taught everything from primary to junior college adults.

I first taught Spanish then moved into primary with a math focus. While in my last assignment in America, I was the department ESL lead in addition to working with the administration to help create a data-driven-student-centered environment for our low perfroming school to help the school as a whole to rise up to the state standards. Over the past year in China, I was working at HOPE International as an Instructional Coach and Curriculum Specialist to aide the staff in implementation of differentiating instruction and vertical alighment of the subjects.

Since graduating, I have worked across the entire Primary age-range, teaching children with a range of special educational needs and second language English learners.
