‘Ambition’, has always been something I have considered important throughout my life.  Learning to work above and beyond and to ‘believe to achieve’ is something I have always kept in mind throughout the last 12 years of teaching. Whilst studying for a Master degree in Mathematics and Physics at UCL in 2005, I realised that teaching was something I was passionate about. After completing my degree, I went on to study for a PGCE at Middlesex University and became a qualified teacher in 2007. Years of working in various schools in London gave me valuable experience and insight and I was ready for a new challenge.

A number of factors have influenced my wish to become a teacher. I have had considerable experience of working with children and young people, in both voluntary and paid capacities since the age of 15. Having gained a 2:1 BA Hons in Physical Theatre, I have been using my talent to inspire young people to learn in the way that I have been encouraged and inspired. Working initially as a Teaching Assistant, I quickly gained the experience necessary to be accepted onto Canterbury Christ Church University, England’s PGCE and completed the course in 2012. I joined Westgate Primary School as a Newly Qualified Teacher, and worked there for 7 years becoming the English Subject Leader and KS2 Phase Leader to which I am very proud of this achievement in such a short space of time, because of improving the school and even winning an Kent Literacy Award too.

I devoted 7 years of my career at Westgate, but needed a fresh, new challenge and decided to pursue teaching abroad. I wasn’t sure where this would take me until I saw the NAE BSB Shunyi school website and was amazed by everything that it had to offer students and teachers. This is somewhere that I will improve my teaching practice, develop as a leader and help the school to achieve the wonderful goals that it has planned.

“Education is learning what you didn’t even know, you didn’t know” – Daniel J Boorstin.

Ever since I can remember, I have been passionate about working with children. I started my journey by becoming a youth leader while still in high school and continued with this for several years. I soon wanted to become more involved in teaching, which led me to use my passion for swimming to become a swimming coach for Swim South Africa while I was completing my undergraduate degree in Archaeology, Media and English at the University of Cape Town. During my time at university, I became involved in a programme that supported students in underprivileged communities by being involved in their after school activites as well as supporting them with their work.

In 2014, I completed my PGCE at the University of Cape Town and taught at an International School in Cape Town, where I spent my first five years as a teacher. Being a person who always looks for new opportunities and challenges, I knew that I wanted to teach abroad, experience a new culture and better myself professionally. Upon seeing NAE BSB Shunyi and their philosophy, I knew that BSB was the right school for me. I liked all that I saw about BSB and knew that as a teacher at BSB I would be able to put their ideals into practice and in doing so, reach my own goals.
