I have held a number of positions in schools and business, always associated with English Language and Literature. I graduated with a degree in English Literature and went on to study Administration and Law. My early career was as a Language Specialist in Business and Legal English. I owned and managed a number of language academies for some years in Spain before being offered a position at the American International School in Bilbao as coordinator and curriculum designer for EAL.

I became involved with Cambridge International Examinations with a remit to implement IGCSE examinations into the school which then led to the IBDP. I have spent four years in Sudan as an IGCSE / IBDP Language and Literature teacher before deciding to move to BSB, a decision prompted by the school’s reputation for excellence.

After qualifying in Britain as an English teacher, I soon found myself in the position of Head of Department and steering my team through the rigours of school inspections to be rewarded with ‘outstanding’. I am the youngest of nine children with a family that is spread out around the world, and a person with a huge sense of loyalty, genuine love of children, compassion for others and a commitment to ‘Every Child Matters’. As a result, I have preferred to stay with schools to see my remit through rather than seek new positions. Hence, in over more than twenty years, I have only worked in four schools albeit, ones with very different environments and needs. With a list far too long to mention of responsibilities and successes during that time, I became an Assistant Head Teacher with responsibilities for staff development and the school’s teacher training programme.

I joined the English department at the British School of Beijing, Shunyi in 2015. In 2007 I graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in English Literature. When I began working in schools I was a teaching assistant but when the chance to become an English teacher arose I jumped at the chance and swiftly fell in love with the career.

I began my teaching career in South Africa and taught English and Afrikaans (an older version of Dutch). I left when my husband was posted to the UK. When I returned to South Africa I joined the South African Revenue Service and worked as the National campaigns manager. This area of work prompted me to pursue an MBA which I completed when we moved to the US where my husband worked for the SA mission to the UN. I joined the UN women’s organization as a volunteer and enjoyed 2 years of understanding first hand some of the pressures that such International organizations experience.

My academic qualifications are as follows: a teaching diploma, BA, BEd. and an MBa.

After teaching in London for 12 years, I decided to make the move to China to teach in a new setting. I am extremely passionate about my role as an educator and have undertaken many different posts throughout my career, all of which have enabled me to become a better teacher and member of the school community.

I have held Pastoral positions such as Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Middle Leader positions and also Senior Leadership positions and feel that all of these have not only given me a better perspective on how a school is run but also a clearer focus on what pupils need in order to be happy and successful.
