Geography Teacher, Head of Year 12 & 13

I was born and brought up in Swansea, South Wales described by Dylan Thomas as an “ugly, lovely town”, which sums the area up perfectly.  On completion of my A-levels at eighteen I went to Liverpool John Moores University. Here I studied a Bachelor of Science in Geology and attained a 2:1 with honours in 2004.

At school and throughout my younger years I had always immersed myself in a variety of sports.  I became very good at rugby. On completing my academic studies I decided to pursue the sport I loved and I was lucky enough to play professionally for several teams including North Otago in New Zealand and the Doncaster Knights in England. My career lasted until 2010 when I suffered a serious knee injury that put an end to my full-time rugby career.

The injury paved the way for my teaching career. I had always harboured ambitions to become a teacher having been taught by some truly inspirational people during my childhood who always encouraged me to follow my dreams and taught me the importance of a good education.  I became a qualified teacher in 2012 through the Graduate Teaching Program in South Yorkshire. Here I successfully taught Geography and Geology to A-level and was rapidly promoted to second in department in Geography and Head of Geology.

    Mathematics and Economics Teacher

Until moving to Beijing, I lived and worked in my home city of Cape Town, South Africa. I graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science in Finance and Accounting before completing a PGCE in Secondary Education, also from the University of Cape Town. Since then, I’ve spent several years teaching IB and Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, Economics, Business Management and Accounting in South African private and international schools, including at one of the only two IB schools in South Africa, where I also held the position of Timetable Coordinator. These different experiences have helped me to shape and align my teaching practices with my teaching philosophy.

After gaining experience in an international school setting, my wife and I decided that it was time to broaden our horizons and continue our teaching journey on the other side of the world. I was immediately drawn to BSB Shunyi’s “Be Ambitious” philosophy, as it aligns closely with my personal and teaching beliefs.

I studied at the University of Ghana where I completed my BA(Hon) degree in Geography and Resource Development with Political Science. I then moved to the UK in 2001 where I did my MSc in Internet Technologies at the University of Bedfordshire, then followed by my PGCE at the University of Hertfordshire. I have been teaching at secondary level since 2004 from KS3 through to KS5. Apart from Geography, I have also taught History, Politics, ICT and Global Perspectives at various levels.

In 2011 I took the middle leader's course at the National College for Teaching and Leadership to prepare me for middle leadership. I held the post of head of department for 5 years until I decided to move overseas to China to start my international teaching career in 2018. Once I moved to China, I took up the role of coordinator for my school's Somerset overseas educational programme that immersed students into cultural and bilingual experiences in the UK to broaden their understanding on the world around them.

I have a BA Honours Degree in History and Politics from University College Dublin and a Professional  Diploma in Education from the National University of Ireland. I am currently studying for a  Master Degree in History from the University of Edinburgh. I am also an assistant examiner for the Cambridge IGCSE History exams.

I have been teaching internationally since I graduated in 2004. For the past 5 years I have been teaching History and Global Perspectives in an international school in Bangkok, Thailand. I was impressed and attracted to The British School of Beijing due to their ethos and philosophy of ‘Be ambitious’. I always tell my students to aim high and to be ambitious as the world needs effective Humanities students to influence, change and develop our future. I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Humanities department in The British School of Beijing.
