Swirly Whirly Learning in Foundation 1

Foundation 1 are a creative bunch of children who have recently been exploring colours in many ways. This has included mixing paints to create new colours and using different media, including their hands and feet, to apply paint to paper.

After reading several books about the ocean including Julia Donaldson’s, Sharing a Shell and Oliver Jeffers, Lost and Found the F1 children embarked on an adventurous journey of their own…creating a Swirly Whirly ocean. Through activities like this the children are able to express themselves creatively; gain independence; improve their gross motor skills and brain connections through big circulating arm movements; and take ownership over their learning and learning journey. And now our learning has journeyed on and we are exploring the artist Wassily Kandinsky.

Instructions in 10 easy to follow steps by F1

Step 1: make it big

Step 2: put blue and white paint in a tub, squeeze it

Step 3: now, paint on big paper

Step 4: use your hands and feet

Step 5: step on it with your feet to spread the paint

Step 6: fall on your bottom and get paint on your bottom

Step 7: wash your hands and wash your feet

Step 8: dry out the paper

Step 9: put the painting on the wall in the classroom

Step 10: make a sign saying Swirly Whirly Ocean that looks wiggly
