The Meerkats have returned from their two week break different children! It is like they all grew up by 6 months during the short break. The talk between children in class has developed into conversations, involving turn taking in both speaking and listening. This has meant that there are less frustrations with one another as they are able to explain their intentions more fully than they could previously.
Increased talking has led to an increase in group play, mostly in the construction area. The Meerkats are working together to construct intricate structures and small worlds. They then use these constructions to lead their role play ideas, acting out scene of dinosaur worlds, zoos, or shopping malls. All the while discussing what could happen next in their elaborate storylines.
Alongside this, their interest in books is certainly not slowing down. Most of the Meerkats spend a portion of every day in our class library reading book, after book, after book by themselves or with a small group of classmates. They are able to tell the story through the pictures or retell stories that they have had, read to them previously. Many Meerkats are now taking these stories they know into the their artworks and telling a story on paper through drawing or painting. What a clever mob of Meerkats I do have!
