Open Days
We are extremely lucky at ISM that for so many children, maths is their favourite subject. Consequently, a whole day dedicated to maths is a celebration that many had been eagerly anticipating. From the moment the children arrived through the school gates until the end of the day, the students enjoyed a feast of maths related activities. The hardest problem of the day? Counting the smiles.
However, Maths Day was not contained only to classes. During break and lunchtimes, children could be seen hopping up and down, timing themselves standing on one leg and engaging in many more maths-related activities.
In our Early Years, the children were shocked to learn that the Numbertaker had been in school overnight and had stolen all the Number 6’s from their rooms. Our brave and valiant young pupils decided that they would save the day and rescue Number 6. So off they set on a series of maths missions to reclaim their beloved number. Luckily for us, they solved the necessary codes and found him!
Our Lower Primary children were also engaged in a wide range of activities, with a particular focus on problem-solving skills. Most students had a go at sudoku puzzles, immediately falling in love with this new challenge. Others could be seen competing with each other at chess. We would not be surprised if a future chess champion rose from Krylatskoe Lower Primary. The children also went on a QR hunt, a favourite activity from last year, finding and answering up to 20 questions from a range of mathematical areas.
However, without doubt, the most popular event of the day was our Kahoot Quiz competitions, and, for our Year Two to Year Four children - our Multiplication Rockslams! Children were answering as many multiplication facts as possible in a given time in a rock concert atmosphere. We had some amazing scores, with the students even outscoring their teachers in many challenges. Our students really do continue to amaze their teachers with their amazing potential and skill.
Learning whilst having fun is a common theme in a lot of our lessons. Children hardly realised they were practising different areas of maths amidst all the excitement. Moreover, the children’s confidence and skills in the different mathematical areas were enhanced throughout the day’s activities.
After such a wonderful event, we are already looking forward to next year’s Maths Day with great excitement!
