The 12th of October marks the beginning of STEAM Week 2020: a week-long celebration of all things celestial, cosmological, and cosmonautical.

This year’s theme is “Into the Void”, with the children sparked into considering… where would we go if we could not live on Earth anymore?

We commanded a mission to a new planet, suitable for human life. Children used a variety of skills including creative arts, engineering, science and mathematics to accomplish this mission.

The children worked through a variety of tasks, such as constructing Lego spaceships, spacesuits from carefully selected materials, and modern new cities to live in. The students also created papier mache planets, discussing the importance of providing food, electricity and water in a sustainable way. Many of them also looked  at ways in which humans are damaging the Earth, and created posters dedicated to UNICEF’s Sustainable Development Goals, focusing most specifically on the SDG 15:  Life on Land.

Our Nursery and Reception students had special tasks too. Our youngest children watched exciting footage of a spaceship appearing on our school field. Their task was to help a baby alien return to its home planet, as it was upset and missed its mother. They carefully constructed rockets and helped the baby alien return home.

Lower Campus children and staff finished off the week with an out-of-this-world dress up day, transforming themselves into aliens and astronauts! STEAM week has certainly been an exciting week of learning and adventure.
