An Update from our Principal

21 11월 2014

Dear Parents and Friends

Now that all the trials of the APEC conference, with its transport difficulties and closure days, are behind us, we can keep our minds on the real business of life at BSB for the remaining three weeks of this term. And what busy weeks they are, with a whole host of productions, sports events, fairs and end-of-term celebrations to look forward to as well as the preparation for crucial mock examinations for our students in examination years.

During the period of the APEC conference, we were pleased to welcome nearly 200 teachers from across Nord Anglia Education’s 6 schools in China (there are now 31 across the world) to the regional conference held for the first time at BSB. I have to mention how proud I am of our staff, teachers and students. The most common comments were things like ‘I have never been in a school with such a buzz’; and that ‘buzz’ is created not by a one-day conference but by the atmosphere of success and achievement that our BSB family creates every day. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to be in this job!

This afternoon, it was my immense privilege to present IGCSE certificates to the current Year 11 students in a special assembly. These are students who took their IGCSE examinations at least a year early, and they achieved absolutely stunning results, with a whole host of A* and A grades. As we always say, school is about so much more than examinations, but examinations are also probably the single most important thing we do. We do the IGCSE because it is just about the only curriculum in the world that gives you a fully internationally recognised, rigorous, examination qualification at the age of 16 and the achievements of these students, in doing it early, are really worthy of praise.

Upcoming events

The next three weeks are indeed packed and, in this newsletter, there are more details of some of the major events. Obviously, you will receive your own invitations to any class events or productions, but I’d like to draw your attention to just a few:

Tomorrow is our Christmas Fayre and German Christmas Market, from 4 to 7:30 pm in the school and, weather permitting, in front of the school. This is always a truly magical affair with the spirit of the German market as you enter, the lighting of the Christmas tree (a little after 6 pm), fun games run by our teachers for all the children (and the not so young!) and approximately 45 vendors to help you with that Christmas shopping!

Next Friday and Saturday (2 performances on Saturday) I am delighted to say that we will be staging our production of GREASE. I have seen some of the rehearsals and there really is some remarkable talent on show. For those of you who don’t know the show, it is a musical based in a 1950s American High School, with really memorable songs and dances, and the evening will be a lot of fun for everyone who attends. Tickets are available from Reception. We have been working hard to really put music and drama on the map and your support for these wonderful students, and the teachers who have supported them, will be much appreciated.

On Saturday 29 November (sadly, the same night as ‘Grease’ but the calendar is so packed there was no alternative) the Parents’ Association are holding their Christmas Party at ‘The Orchard’. This is always a great event with good food, dancing and excellent company, and is a really good way to end the term relaxing with other parents and friends of the school. More details and tickets available from the PA in Chatterbox.

Inspection update

I am sure many of you are wondering what has happening with our school inspection which took place at the beginning of October. I am very sorry to say that, at the time of writing, we have still not received the first draft of the report (they are supposed to produce it within 2 weeks of the inspection), which then has to go through a lot of checking and validation before it is published. I am still hoping we will manage to get a final version from the inspection provider before Christmas and I will keep parents informed along the way.

I wish you an excellent weekend and a really successful last few weeks of term.

Best wishes

Andy Puttock
