BSB Sports Program 2014-2015

25 8월 2014

An introduction to our Sports Program & Weekly Communication

  • Bear's Baseball

Given many of us come from a variety of  backgrounds, state schools, other international schools big or small, please find the below email as a guideline to what sports are on offer at BSB as well as the conferences we participate in locally as well as internationally, and the students that partake in them.

Last year we had 579 registered students play on 48 teams broken up further into age specific levels, i.e. U19/U14/U11. These teams play or are scheduled over the course of the academic year into 4 seasons. The seasons more or less finish and start at or around the same time but are different slightly due to some conference commitments.

  • Season 1: August 25th to November 9th
  • Season 2: November 10th to February 2nd
  • Season 3: February 3rd to April 19th
  • Season 4 April 20th to June 22nd

Core sports for Secondary are volleyball, basketball, football, swimming, rugby, & netball. Core sports for Primary are football, handball, & T-ball & swimming. Both the secondary/primary schools have a great deal more non-core sports such as cross country, athletics, table tennis, badminton, baseball, softball, & tennis to name a few. When it comes to a sports program our core sports are a commitment time-wise due to conference obligations but if we have students interested to play in other sports, it’s never hard to find competitions. For example, last year at the primary level we participated in a Climbing Competition, which we won.

All of the sports conferences we participate in are standard for the Beijing International Schools market, and have a variety of other facets to membership such as sections for fine arts, math, or forensics to name just a few.

The local sports conference is called the International Schools Athletic Conference or ISAC. It is an organization of 15 schools, mainly within Beijing. Sport teams in secondary have fixtures and exchanges throughout the season with a season-ending city championships broken up by divisions. For example our U19 boys’ volleyball team plays in Division 1. Our U19 girls’ volleyball team plays in Division 3. Primary have one exchange and a season-ending city championships but no fixtures over the course of the season. Saturdays are the primary day for all ISAC tournaments.

The three international conferences we participate in are AISA, ACAMIS & FOBISIA.

AISA stands for Association of International Schools in Asia. In addition to Sport, BSB will be hosting the AISA Maths & Leadership Conference at the end of January (Jan 29th to 31st ) 2015.

ACAMIS stands for Association of China and Mongolia International Schools. On the sport side we compete in the U19 core sports, volleyball, basketball, and football (soccer). Every NAE school in China is a member of ACAMIS. Competitions take place within Mainland China, Mongolia, Hong Kong, & Macau.

FOBISIA stands for Federation of British International Schools in Asia and has 39 member schools impacting over 29,600 students. On top of sports, music represents BSB at FOBISIA events. In terms of participation (FOBISIA is highly selective) last year in Primary we had 179 students try out for 84 roster spots. Being selected for this team is a strict time commitment. Teams train 4-5 days a week, some early morning, and extra longer training sessions all geared to get our teams ready for these games.

Outside the conferences we participate internally through our House Sport system. Within PE lessons for secondary and scheduled times for primary all BSB students have an opportunity to play competitive sport. This year we have 46 House Sport events scheduled over the course of the year. Secondary we will even celebrate a “Day of Sport” scheduled for Tuesday 14th October (Athletics/Swimming/Netball/Rugby). No matter a student’s desire to play on a sport team all students get an opportunity to play competitive sport within the House sport system. This is completely inclusive for all BSB students, meaning everyone gets an opportunity to play if they choose to do so.

Finally, a weekly ‘BSB Week in Sport’ blog will appear every Monday highlighting all of the results from the previous week as well as what training is scheduled for the present week and any other Sport announcements (example below). All sport fixtures can also be assessed on the whole school calendar.
