BSB Shunyi Awarded The Secondary Geography Quality Mark!

The Geographical Association (GA) is delighted to announce their Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) awardees in September 2016.

  • Secondary Geography Quality Mark 2016
  • Geographical Association

The SGQM award process encourages and supports schools to reflect on their work and strive for the highest quality in their teaching. All the award winners undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which all are continuing to embrace new and innovative approaches to teaching geography. The SGQM, now into its 10th year, recognises student attainment, progress and achievement in areas such as geographical knowledge, understanding, values, skills and concepts, and sets expectations about the quality of teaching in geography. It aims to promote effective subject leadership and management, helping subject leaders raise the standards of geography in their schools.

425 SGQM’s have been awarded since its launch in 2006, and with a total of 37 active Centres of Excellence there is an increasingly widespread support network for teachers. Furthermore, awards have also been presented to overseas schools in Thailand,Vietnam, China, Cyprus and Hong Kong. Also, a number of schools achieved the award for the 4th time this year which GA feels is a significant achievement!

Alan Kinder, Chief Executive of the GA, says:

‘There has never been a more important time for all children and young people to study geography. Growing up in the 21st century means living in an increasingly interconnected world, one facing a growing number of global challenges such as climate change and the need to live our lives sustainably. Geography not only fascinates and inspires young people, it provides them with the knowledge and understanding they need to live in the modern world. Geography is, as we say in the GA’s Manifesto, “fundamental to everyone” and I am delighted that a growing number of primary schools are teaching their students to fully engage with the subject.’

Kaye MacIver, Head of Humanities says:

‘I am so proud of our students and the Geography Department. Our  staff  have worked very hard to ensure the Geography curriculum is academically challenging and engaging by rewriting the KS3 curriculum and enhancing an already sound KS4 curriculum. Add to this our fabulous IB and IGCSE results of 2016 in Geography, we know the awarding of the Secondary Geography Quality Mark: in recognition of excellence in teaching and learning in geography by the Geographical Association of England is well deserved. It took one school year to prepare the submission pack for this award along with all the administrative materials, this could not be achieved without the amazing exemplar material that was produced in our lessons from secondary students at BSB.  We are currently the only international school in Beijing to have achieved this quality mark for our Geography curriculum. Well done to all the staff and students at BSB!’

The Secondary Geography Quality Mark awardees will be acknowledged at the 2017 GA Annual Conference held at the University of Guildford Thursday 20 – Saturday 22 April. All award winners will be invited to attend the Awards Presentation event on the Thursday evening.
