VSE Through A Student's Eyes

Mabel joined us in 2006, and is currently a Year 12 student studying Maths, Biology, Computer Science and History for A-Level. She has been participating in our VSE (Virtual School Experience) over the past few months. Here is a short interview we had with her recently: she would like to share with us some of her personal experience as well as thoughts and feelings about the special experience that our outstanding BSG teachers have created!

How do you feel about VSE learning?

Although VSE learning has been beneficial as of recent, it is still incomparable to physical learning. Though I am grateful that I have been able to learn away from school, I am sure many will agree with me when I say that physical lessons are much more effective and entertaining. It has however, been an interesting experience, and one that I am glad to have endured.

What is the main difference between VSE and physical lessons?

There are quite a few differences between VSE and physical lessons. For example, things such as connectivity issues and learning environments sometimes hinder the lesson, but it is something that has to be endured.

Another difference is the awkward silence that occurs more frequently online than in the classroom, and the strange moments where you’re not sure if it is appropriate to interject.

Additionally, the uncomfortable feeling of having your camera on, but the loss of classroom immersion when you can’t see or hear anyone else.

How have your teachers helped you cope with your learning on VSE?

Though VSE learning has been tough and a bit of a struggle, my teachers have helped by being available outside of lesson time via emails to answer questions. As well as that, the frequency at which the check in to see if we’re okay with the lesson’s content during the class has also been much appreciated.

Mabel’s teachers have been incredibly happy with her achievements and progress despite the challenges VSE has created. We are glad to welcome her back to school this Wednesday — to start some physical learning!
