Last month, three Village students were selected to participate in the 2019 ReEvolution Summit held at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in the Houston Medical Center. 11th grader Kareem, 10th grader Anirudh, and 9th grader Shanaya got the opportunity to be side-by-side with world renowned cardiac surgeons as they were trained on the latest minimally invasive cardiac surgical techniques at the state of the art MITIE (Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Education) training facility. Invited faculty from all over the world, including China, Italy, and Australia, participated in this annual event. The ReEvolution Summit Program Director Mahesh Ramchandani expressed his excitement to have Village students in attendance via twitter.
The students were given an up-close, hands-on experience which included robotic surgical equipment, intricate stitching techniques, and demonstrations of devices. The purpose of including students at this event was to expose them to the opportunities available in the field of cardiovascular surgery and the latest technology offered at MITIE. The students were able to learn and network with esteemed faculty and practicing physicians from various sub-specialties. Internship coordinator TeKedra Pierre joined the students during this summit, reflecting, "I am hopeful that this experience will reinforce the desire for each of them to pursue a career in medicine while realizing that Methodist is a leader in education, research, and training."
