FOBISIA Swimming - Bangkok 2019

BSKL entered the annual FOBISIA swim meet hosted by Bangkok Prep school last weekend. 38 students across Primary and Secondary flew to Thailand to represent BSKL in this very prestigious competition. The standard of swimming was incredibly high with over 600 swimmers from 24 different schools taking part.

Our students trained very hard leading up to the event, many of them continuing their training programs over the Christmas holidays.

We departed Malaysia on Thursday 10th January to be ready for the long distance events on the first day of competition. The events posed some of the toughest challenges our students could face, swimming up to 400m freestyle or harder still the 400m IM. Many of our students took on the challenge willingly, scoring valuable team points - worthy mentions must go to Alison Wright, Stella Cassey, Yana Bacha, Alejandro Fernandez, Zhi Lin Teoh, Alex Traerup, Thomas Harkin, Paige Bukovsan, Samantha Scanlan and Josh Bekink, for completing such grueling events.

Following the long distance races, our sprinters took to the pool for some lightening quick heats. We held our own in most of the events and even managed some podium finishes in both the individual and relay events. These awards went to Daniel Liew, Yana Bacha, Alison Wright, Weijie Chiam and Leila Furlong. The most distinguished award went to our star swimmer Daniel Liew winning the ‘over 15’ age group category making him the overall fastest swimmer at this competition.

Bangkok swim

BSKL finished the competition in 7th place out of 24 schools. More impressive still, we were the second highest scoring visiting team.

Medals and trophies however, are not everything. We were also blown away by the students’ comradery. Our youngest student was 9 years old, and the eldest was 17 years old. The advice and guidance given by our older students was by far the highlight of the trip for me. Both around the pool and in the hotel students formed friendships that will continue long after this trip. They represented themselves and BSKL to the highest level, for which I am incredibly proud.

Finally, I would like to thank all of the parents who supported this trip. Without your help these experiences would not be possible.
