Year 2 Term 1 Newsletter

This Term in topic, the children have been learning about Castles. The topic has been taught through History, Geography, Art and English lessons. In English the children have been writing non-chronological reports, thinking about sub-titles, paragraphs and opening statements. They spent time learning all about these different features and using their knowledge of castles to create their own report. In History and Geography the children have been learning all about life in a castle. They have been focusing on castle defenses, castle features in History. Geography has been focusing on the people living in the castles and how they were able to survive without the modern luxuries we have now. In art the children have enjoyed creating a variety of pieces including shields, coats of arms and a shoebox castle. We were fortunate enough to be able to go on a field trip to Intramuros. The children had a fantastic time on the guided tour where they were able to put their knowledge into context and experience what a real castle would be like. The term concluded with our topic day where the children looked fantastic in their costumes! They built boats, rode horses, made bows and arrows, had a banquet and learnt a medieval dance. Like the field trip, this day allowed the children to put their knowledge into practice in a practical way and allowed them to be princes and princesses, even just for one day.
