"Changing lives. One student at a time"
Colleges That Change Lives [CTCL] is committed to the advancement and support of a student-centered college search process. The college search should be about the student and finding the right fit school for each individual. On March 1, the British International School HCMC was honoured to host the first Colleges that Change Lives Fair.
All of the CTCL colleges are small, liberal arts colleges and universities. The admission processes are incredibly personal, holistic and student-centered. For our students, being able to meet with the college representatives was a valuable opportunity. We must not underestimate the role a college representative plays during the admissions process. Whilst every college has its own selection process, often it is the college admissions representative assigned to our region who will first read the application. They will rate it according to their institutional priorities and a prescribed set of factors, and write a summary comment. By meeting with college representatives during these visits, they can become advocates for our students during the selection process.
The goal of these visits is for the college representative to meet with students and answer any questions they may have. It is also an opportunity for them to find out if the student would be a great fit for their college or university. According to a study by the University of Rochester that identified factors that mattered in merit award scholarship decisions, a “teenager who had serious conversations with the admissions and financial aid office” ended up with an extra $3000 in award money. Reaching out to admissions representatives with meaningful conversation can help. Yesterday, we learnt that $450,000 was awarded in scholarships by four of the colleges from the CTCL group to BIS students who applied in the last year. Something to consider supporting when colleges and universities come to BIS for future visits!
Speaking with the representatives after the fair, they commented unanimously on how engaged our students were. Each of the colleges was incredibly impressed by our students and school.
This was the first time the CTCL toured as a group, the first fair of its kind in Ho Chi Minh City. We hope to welcome some of the colleges back in Term 1 2016.
