24-Hour Charity Mathathon

14 十月 2015

  • Mathathon 2015

Last year the BSB community witnessed the first all-mathematics-themed week at our school during which all students of the Secondary School (aged 11-19) worked on various projects. In a grand finale, 500 students attempted to assemble the world's biggest mathematical puzzle over the course of a whole day. The puzzle itself pioneered a new kind of use of the well-known Tarsia software. Due to the time pressure involved with regards to school busese, we unfortunately only came close to breaking the record.

This year, on 30th/31st October 2015, BSB will be hosting a 24-hour Charity Maths Puzzle World Record Attempt, starting at 4 pm. We are raising funds for Beijing’s School for the Deaf and Mute all the while assembling the world’s biggest mathematics puzzle.

Our BSB students are committed to helping organize excursions for the children attending the School for the Deaf and Mute. The children are between 14 and 20 years old. Three weeks ago was the first time in their lives that they sampled Malaysian cuisine and went to the movie theatre! Together with two CAS projects that Year 12 and Year 13 students are organizing, our aim is to provide a school bus once per month for the students to explore the city they live in.

BSB students can choose to either stay for the whole 24 hours and have breaks in between puzzling sessions or they may choose to stay a little after school on Friday and then come back for a final effort on Saturday. Participants will be well fed throughout the entire event and there are sleeping opportunities as well. This will be a fun activity for a bunch of friends wanting to stay away from their couches at home for one night.
