BSB at Beijing Model United Nations (BEIMUN) Conference

25 三月 2015

  • Model United Nationals Team

The Model United Nations (MUN) students at BSB attended the Beijing Model United Nations (BEIMUN)  XXII from Thursday 12th March to Saturday 14th March, 2015. This was an exciting event for the students. They have been working hard in researching their country and on the topics they will be debating and trying to work out resolutions to real world problems. Many schools from around the globe attended the event and was a tremendous experience for the MUN students. Please see below an update from Emily Liu, Year 11 student.

BSB at BEIMUN XXII 2015

An update from Emily Liu, Year 11

Suit up, get down to business and so began yet another three-day impersonation as a UN delegate with ultimate professionalism. The Model United Nations (MUN) team at the British School of Beijing (BSB), Shunyi embarked on a fruitful, rewarding journey, BEIMUN conference of 2015 on the 12th of March. BEIMUN is not only the second-largest MUN conference in Asia with more than 900 delegates, but it is also highly respected around the globe. The current UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon personally congratulated the tremendous outcomes achieved by BEIMUN delegates in 2009.

The team consists of two executive members, an assistant president and deputy assistant president, as well as eight delegates spreading over Human Rights Councils, Environment Commissions and the General Assembly along with two beloved and attentive directors. The entire team has been extremely dedicated to some of the world’s most serious and imminent issues. Thanks to the thorough preparation work done and considerable amount of efforts exerted by every participant, the result was a great success.

On the first day of BEIMUN conference, the delegates merged their resolutions and engaged in various discussions amongst their council with different focuses of issues, for example combatting LGBT rights in Russia; sex-trafficking in Southeast Asia and possible suggestions of e-waste disposal methods. The chairs then perused through the resolutions with abundant background knowledge acquired months in prior to the conference, which was then sent to the Approval Panel to be finalised by the directors.

With the arrival of the second and the most heated, frantic, intense day of debates upon delegates, all of them embraced the challenge with courage and intelligence. Some of the delegates made inspiring speeches and answered rather acute questions; submitted feasible amendments to their peers’ resolutions; and the chairs did a fantastic job at organising forums. By the end of the day, most of the resolutions produced by our team were voted to pass whilst some were unfortunately rejected. Later on that night, the team took their mind off global crisis temporarily, where they enjoyed the BEIMUN ball; mingled with their group members and devoured an excellent buffet.

Concluded with the last few debates on topics such as racial profiling in the USA, followed by a relaxed and entertaining plenary session, our team attended the closing ceremony and also waved goodbyes to our new friends with contact details exchanged.

Overall, this BEIMUN event can only be summarised as an amazing, worthwhile experience and everyone walked out of Crown Plaza Hotel with maturity, along with invaluable memories.

Moreover, the team was thrilled to hear that both of our current executive members performed outstandingly in the interviews for BEIMUN 2016, in which they both received high positions within the leadership team. To take a glimpse into the future, the directors are convinced that all participants are capable for wider opportunities outside of BEIMUN, and are planning now for other conferences around China and Asia.

According to our Assistant President of Human Rights Council, Jenny Hwang, being a delegate is fun; yet “holding the gavel and being the chair is more than fantastic”. She hopes that her “first chairing experience won’t be her last”, and she is “more than eager to take on a larger responsibilities in her new role next year.”

Just like what the Secretary General, Vanessa Meng said in her closing speech, the sense of security in the world comes from determination and certainty. With the ever-changing world evolving around us; the overwhelming changes happening every mere second; shaping our history in every possible way, all we can do is to be certain that we can turn the useless simulation conferences into useful experiences. We can only be certain, that the next conference in brighter tomorrow would be just as “unforgettable, inspiring and extraordinary” as Delegate Sunny Hwang (Year 10) described BEIMUN 2015.
