The Big Jig - Maths Fortnight

BSB is excited to announced that The Big Jig will take place in Secondary over the next two weeks from 13th to 24th April.

There are two sides to The Big Jig:

1. 13th - 17th April  

Big Jig Dancing & House Competition - doing Mathematical dances in Mathematics lessons as a House Competition and voting on which is the best

Dances will take place in Mathematics lessons and each class will have a winner and runner up for the best dancer. Students will win points for their house and these will be collated across the year group. The idea for our dance positions comes from ‘The Dancing Man Cipher’ from Sherlock Holmes.

A world record attempt at building the largest ever mathematics jigsaw puzzle!

About Tarsia

Tarsia is a software package that allows you to make your own mathematical jigsaws. It is like a normal jigsaw, but instead of lining up the pieces using a picture the edges are lined up using mathematical equations. One edge will have a mathematical expression and it lines up with another edge with an equivalent expression. Tarsia is sometimes used to facilitate learning in Mathematics and can be used for just about any age or level of study.

The BSB Shunyi Tarsia puzzle has been designed with just under 9000 linking equations on about 6000 jig saw pieces. It is hoped that in doing this project we will break a world record for the largest ever mathematical puzzle - the previous record standing at 1000 pieces.

In our school, the puzzle solution will involve about 500 students at all levels of secondary school Mathematics.
