Year 7,8 & 9 students celebrate STEAM Week

29 五月 2015

  • STEAM week poster

STEAM week celebrates all that is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.

On the week of the 1st – 5th June, the students of KS3 will have themed lessons throughout their Science, Maths, Information Technology (IT), Design & Technology (DT) and Art lessons to promote the links between the subjects.

Year 7 students will be working around the theme of cars, where they will build a car in DT, look at the Science of thrust,  breaking and motors in Science, design their car in Art, doing a taxi simulation in Maths and programming in IT.

Year 8 students will be working on Time, competing in a house competition to build a timing device that times precisely 60 seconds out of recyclable material in the multipurpose room on Thursday 4th June, and looking at different ways to measure and record time in their lessons.

Year 9 students will be looking at the topic of trebuchets, they will be designing them using moments in Science, building them in DT, producing Lego robotic trebuchets in IT, calculating the arch in Maths and then using their built trebuchets in Art to produce pieces of Art.

Alongside lessons, a number of lunch time clubs are also available throughout the week including producing slim mould, making bath bombs and dissection, culminating in a fair on Friday 5th June where students will be able to see demonstration using liquid nitrogen, whiz bang chemistry and try their hands at tower building, light painting and 3D printing.

Throughout the week students from KS3 and KS4 will also be popping in to primary lessons to demonstrate simple but exciting experiments to the students. We are also providing the opportunity for thirty Year 7 students to go to the Zoo, encouraging conversations about conservation and animal welfare and Year 12 students will be hearing a talk from a member of Shell about the role of STEAM in the company.

The idea of the week is to highlight the links between the topics and most importantly highlight careers that use all or a combination of the topics. STEAM careers quite literally design the world we live in and are in great demand. We hope to inspire the pupils to follow this pathway in the future.
