World Scholars' Cup Update from Kuala Lumpur - Last Day

Friday June 26 Junior Team – update from Mr. Martin Harrison

Well today saw the final day in our Junior World Scholars journey to Kuala Lumpur. It was not a pretty start as the pace and trials of the tournament over the past few days really bit hard on our young academic braves. In true BSB fashion though, they showed their true grit and rallied together to face the day ahead.

On arriving at the Petronas Towers Conference Centre, it was like entering a scene from the 'Walking Dead', as the students from the other schools were clearly feeling the pace of the tournament too! But it was a relaxed morning, as the students were treated to the second round of the World Scholars Show! The students enjoyed more acts from students from the tournament and were particularly wowed by one student who had memorised and recited Pye to the thousandth digit! After the talent show, the students enjoyed a three course brunch in the Grand Ballroom along with the other 1700 students from the competition ( apologies for getting the numbers wrong in the earlier blogs but I thought that the 1700 students listed were a sum total of both Seniors and Juniors. It turns out that the Junior section has the full amount. That is how challenging it has been for our students ).

The final part of the day was given to the awards ceremony. I was more than a little nervous for our students as they were some of the youngest in the junior rounds and one of the smallest groups. You can imagine my delight and pride when Jeremy Cao won two silver medals for being one of the top 100 individual debaters in the tournament, placing him in the top five percent of the WSC. Alex Kroepfl also won Di Vinci medal for being in the top 100 individual all round subject based debaters. Tonight the juniors have chosen to celebrate at 'Johnny Rocket's', as requested by Claire Shannon-Vermillion as it is one of her favourite diners back home in Wisconsin. Another cultural learning experience for our students.

As this is my final report on the World Scholars Cup in Kuala Lumpur, I would like to say how proud I am of our students. It has been a real honour to have been with them and watched them throughout the tournament. The have been a real credit to themselves, their parents and BSB in everything that they have done and achieved this week.

If Alex, Banu, Claire, George, Jeremy and Konnor represent the next generation, then the future is more than safe in their hands!

Well done BSB World Junior Scholars 2015! So proud!
