International Schools Drug Education Forum 16th Sep

27 八月 2015

Please find a letter written jointly by the Heads of the 4 largest international schools in Beijing. Parents are invited to join the forum on 16th September at ISB or contact our Principal, Mr. Andy Puttock, if you have any suggestions.

  • No Drugs

Dear Parents and Staff:

In April 2015, our expatriate community received a stern reminder about the serious consequences of illegal drug use following the detention of students from a local international school. Since then, we have sought to collectively address this serious issue by reiterating to students, parents, and staff in our communities the consequences of drug use, especially the harsh penalties for drug crimes in China.

As part of our drug education practice, senior leaders and teachers at each of our schools regularly highlight the dangers of violating laws in China and the country’s ongoing crackdown against drugs. Our staff also regularly hold sessions for students and parents about the consequences of using drugs and alcohol generally, specifically in Beijing. Furthermore, we have collectively engaged with external consultants whose experience in handling such cases from legal and diplomatic perspectives reinforces the grave ramifications of being involved with drugs in China.

Respecting our host country’s laws is a responsibility we take seriously as international schools. While we have been heartened by the firm resolve shown by our school communities against drugs since April’s incident, we feel it would be valuable for us to organize a forum that informs our parents, students, and staff of the risks of illegal drug use in China and outlines our support services.

We plan to bring together representatives from foreign embassies, including regional security officers and drug education professionals to share a unified message about the dangers of alcohol consumption and illegal drug use, supply, and possession in China.

The forum, including a Q&A session, will be held at ISB’s theatre from 6:30 pm on Wednesday, September 16. If you have any thoughts on the issue, information pertinent to recent events, or suggestions for discussion topics at the forum, please email ISB’s Head of School assistant Tania Buyuklieva or contact the Head of your own school at any time.

Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe and we hope you can attend our forum.

Warm regards,

Andy Puttock David Mansfield Tarek Razik Courtney Lowe
