James Thorp has been at our school for four years and in that time has really thrived within the BSB community. For James, our relatively small school “creates an environment where most people know each other and you know all events that are happening, therefore giving you many different opportunities to take part in school activities as well as representing the school.” He certainly displays a positive approach to BSB school life, embracing the ‘Be Ambitious’ motto in academicshe wants to achieve “at least A's for all [his] subjects”- and in co-curricular activities too, from the school musical to various sports. It’s wonderful to see him flourish!
James’s favourite subjects are Sports Science, Music, and Physics- quite the variety! Perhaps the love of Physics is why he has such a big interest in lego: “I love to collect and design buildings, bridges, landscapes, in lego.” A talented sportsman, James displays this both within the classroom and beyond. For example, he swims for the BSB Aquabears Team as well as Fire Power, a Beijing swimming club based in Dragon Bay. His swimming has also taken him to Beijing’s Olympic pool, the Water Cube, where he has competed twice. His ambition to succeed as well as seize opportunities to develop his talent is proof of his dedication and commitment. This makes him a fantastic ambassador for our school within the wider Beijing community.
James is equally talented in music, playing both piano and clarinet to performance-level standard. Our school community has been able to enjoy this in different settings, such as in last year’s musical production of ‘School of Rock’, as well as in whole school assemblies. Indeed, playing ‘The Last Post’ in the Remembrance Day Assembly November 2020 is James’s proudest achievement to date: “This made me very proud for I am British and I was playing the music to remember all the soldiers from my country who lost their lives fighting for us to have a peaceful life, so for me playing this for the whole of BSB was a very proud moment.” We look forward to sharing more proud moments as James continues his journey at BSB.
