Chris Planchant

Chris Planchant (1)

Geography Teacher, Head of Year 12 & 13

I was born and brought up in Swansea, South Wales described by Dylan Thomas as an “ugly, lovely town”, which sums the area up perfectly.  On completion of my A-levels at eighteen I went to Liverpool John Moores University. Here I studied a Bachelor of Science in Geology and attained a 2:1 with honours in 2004.

At school and throughout my younger years I had always immersed myself in a variety of sports.  I became very good at rugby. On completing my academic studies I decided to pursue the sport I loved and I was lucky enough to play professionally for several teams including North Otago in New Zealand and the Doncaster Knights in England. My career lasted until 2010 when I suffered a serious knee injury that put an end to my full-time rugby career.

The injury paved the way for my teaching career. I had always harboured ambitions to become a teacher having been taught by some truly inspirational people during my childhood who always encouraged me to follow my dreams and taught me the importance of a good education.  I received the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)  in 2012 through the Doncaster Graduate Teaching Program. Here I successfully taught Geography and Geology to A-level and was rapidly promoted to second in department in Geography and Head of Geology. I also received my Professional Certificate Education (PCE) Teaching and Learning Geoscience at Keele University.

As a teacher I am very passionate about my subject and always try to purvey this passion to my students. Every student in my classroom is important and I always encourage them to be the best that they can be regardless of ability or background. Students work hard in my lessons but also enjoy the learning environment created.

I am married and have two young children who keep me very busy outside of school. I also like to keep fit by walking my dog, running, swimming and cycling. I enjoy travelling, reading and cooking and look forward to exploring China and other parts of South East Asia in the foreseeable future.

In 2017, I am delighted to have the opportunity to teach at BSB.
