Brian Chesher

Brian Chesher 2

University and Careers Counsellor

My name is Brian Chesher and I am very excited to join the BSB family. I am originally an IBDP English teacher, who with my team teachers created an A2 and more recently a Language and Literature curriculum. After a dozen years of teaching Middle and High School English, I shifted focus to supporting students outside the curriculum in the counselling realm. Last year, in my fifth year of counselling, I attended and presented at the ISCA (Internatinal School Counselling Association) annual conference in the wellbeing section. I hope to continue to grow and develop in a similar manner as  a Careers and University Counsellor.

I have a BA in Cultural Anthropology with a minor in Geography from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada; a PGCE from Sunderland University, through Distance Education, Knowledge Village Dubai and I have an International School Counsellor Certificate from the Counsellor Training Centre, Miami, USA. I have also been a member of the International School Counselor Association and a presenter at the 2018 annual conference. I have completed a great deal of counselling PD and MOOCS.

In the past I have enjoyed getting to know students outside of the classroom or outside the counselling office by joining trips, teaching aikido and having a sailing club and a SCUBA club. In this role as the Careers and University Counsellor I look forward to getting to know about how each and every student lives a balanced and an ambitious life. Please stop by my office or stop me in the hallway and say hello.

As a new father, my life is fairly simple at the moment. It revolves around my family; my son Tommy and my wife Quynh. As a family we enjoy getting out and trying new food and then attempting to cook it at home. We also like a good adventure, whether in the city or abroad. Regularly I make time for myself to train in martial arts or go to the gym. Currently, I am a student of the oldest Japanese martial art, Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. I appreciate how it works the mind, body and spirit. Although it may seem so, martial arts are about self-development, and not about fighting. If I have extra time to myself I enjoy watching sci-fi, fantasy and superhero movies. I am currently reading Ishmael: A novel, written by Daniel Quinn.
