Year 3 have been investigating and researching magnets and forces! - Magnets and Forces Investigate and Research
Our cross-curricular lessons this week involved an investigation into how magnets work, their properties and the vocabulary used to understand how they work. The children made predictions about what would happen if they touched two magnets together and then recorded their predictions. Next, they tested their theories and recorded their conclusions, discovering how magnets repel and attract under different conditions.  We then used what we had learned about magnets to make our own compass using only a needle, a bowl of water, a circle of card and a magnet! They learned that by rubbing the needle on the magnet it creates a link to the earth’s magnetic field which then allows it to align with the earth’s magnetic poles. You can try this at home! To compliment this learning, in ICT we researched and compared 2 search engines, using questions designed to retrieve information on magnets and forces, the children used Google and Bing. They found out how to navigate to the sites and then wrote down the information they found out, Finally, they discussed which search engine was easier to navigate and completed a survey from Mrs. Cuming about the pros and cons of each one. What a fabulous learning experience!
