A powerful example of student creativity

Shumei’s winning artwork, An Ode to Huang Shan (Huang Mountain), reflects a thoughtful exploration of nature, culture, and identity. Inspired by traditional Chinese shan shui landscape art, the work highlights the beauty and depth of Huang Shan painting traditions.

In Shumei’s own words:

“In this painting I explore the relationship between nature and culture, inspired by traditional Chinese shan shui landscapes. Misty mountains suggest mystery and strength, while the pine tree symbolises resilience and longevity. The vertical composition creates a journey through the landscape, expressing respect for nature and the quiet balance between the natural world and human reflection.”

This striking piece demonstrates not only technical skill but also the confidence to express a personal and cultural narrative. It is a strong example of the creativity developed through visual arts education at BSG.

Recognition from the Global Campus judges

The judging panel, including external artist Laura Medcalf, praised the work for its depth and execution:

“An exceptional drawing that beautifully captures the harmony and detail of a solitary tree within a mountainous landscape. The delicate, almost mystical quality of the composition is enhanced by the subtle depiction of mist flowing through the mountains, creating a strong sense of atmosphere and depth. The striking use of a green highlight against the black and white background draws the viewer’s eye directly to the tree, making it a powerful focal point. Thoughtful compositional decisions and refined attention to detail result in a highly impactful and visually compelling artwork.”

As the art competition winner, Shumei will receive a Global Campus certificate, a Creative pin badge, and access to an exclusive masterclass with Laura Medcalf.

Strength in the BSG arts programme

This success reflects the strength of the arts at The British School of Guangzhou. Under the leadership of Mr Ajode and Ms Xu, the school arts programme continues to grow in both quality and participation.

Their guidance has raised the standard of secondary school art across BSG. Students are more engaged, more ambitious, and more confident in expressing their ideas. There is a clear rise in interest in art, with more students choosing to explore creative pathways and produce high-quality work.

This achievement highlights the impact of strong teaching in creative education and reinforces BSG’s position as a leading international school in Guangzhou for the arts.

Celebrating BSG student success

Shumei’s success is a proud moment for the whole school community. It reflects the dedication of the student, the support of expert teachers, and the strength of the learning environment.

At BSG, student success is built through opportunity, guidance, and the freedom to create.

We look forward to seeing what Shumei creates next.
