Classroom News & Photos - Year 3

05 November 2014

Year 3 kicked off the week with house football. The field was a myriad of colour as the teams darted around trying to score against the opposition. Well done to all!

Measurement was our main focus in mathematics this week. The activities were based on Jim and the Beanstalk; a modern day version of the traditional tale Jack and the Beanstalk.  In the story, Jim helps the aged giant by going back down the stalk to order the giant a pair of glasses from the oculist, dentures from the dentist and a wig from the perruquier.

To find a class Jim, Year 3 set to task measuring their partner's height. All heights were collated, added and divided by the number of pupils in the class. In a Cinderella like moment, the class Jim was announced by seeing which child was of average height. The height of the giant was then calculated by multiplying "Jim's " height by six. On the running trundle wheels and metre sticks were used to mark out the height of the giant. The children returned indoors and worked as a team to create their class  giant. Great care was taken to ensure accurate measurements were used.

Length of hair was calculated, the perimeter of glasses was mapped out and areas of teeth were worked out. Now the days are getting colder, the giant needs gloves and socks so back to the drawing board to work out the area of his hands and feet!
