Congratulations to Darren Chong, who was in Year 13 last year, for being awarded the Gold Certificate for the International Award / Duke of Edinburgh Award on 7th November, 2015! This is a great honour for Darren and for BSB Shunyi!

To qualify for this award, Darren had to pass the Bronze and Silver Award stages, that each took one year. For the two year Gold Award, Darren had to do a Skill, Service, Adventurous Journey and a Residential Project. For his Service, Darren was a Primary School classroom assistant, his Physical Recreation was in Badminton and his Skill involved him improving his piano playing so as to pass the ABRSM Grade 8 exam.

The Residential Project saw Darren spend a week in Shanghai (September 2015), helping at the Will Foundation Outreach Centre. This centre helps educate children with severe learning disabilities, such as Down's Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy.

Finally, Darren had to complete an Adventurous Journey. For this he chose an ‘Exploration’ theme in which he flew to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in June 2015. He was interested in exploring any historical evidence remaining from the Vietnam War on Ho Chi Minh City and to find out the local people’s views on the war.  The practice explorations were carried out in Qingdao and Beijing.

A considerable amount of time and effort was spent by Darren over the last two years in completing the above activities while studying for his IGCE examinations. I have been impressed by his dedication, organisation, leadership, team work skills and perseverance.

Once again, well done to Darren Chong for being accepted by the International Award organisation for the Gold Award.
