Dear BSB students and parents,

On Tuesday 16th March, Year 8 were off timetable to explore a challenge in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Students were given the theme of “Into the Void Challenge 2– Mission MOXIE” which was designed by Professor Jeff Hoffman whose is a Professor currently at MIT in the department of aeronautics and astronautics and was an ex-NASA astronaut. Students spent the day in mixed groups and undertook their tasks on a rotation basis.

  • In Science, students carried out science experiments using the scientific method to test how filters work and whether filters work to their given specifications followed by making solar panel remote control rovers.
  • In the Design and Technology (DT) Workshop, they made an almost life-size model of the Rover Perseverance. Perseverance landed on the 18th of February 2021 on Mars.
  • In Art, students were introduced to the topography and landscape of the surface of Mars and made “Mars rocks” of all different shapes and sizes.

The day ended with presentations from each group highlighting their days work encompassing the 3 cornerstones of the NAE-MIT Learner Ambitions which are: “Ways of thinking”, “Ways of doing” and “Ways of Being”. The day was a huge success enjoyed by the all students and teachers involved.

The presentation videos have been shared on the Global Campus MIT Challenge 2: Mission MOXIE website (https://globalcampus.nae.school/course/view.php?id=741) to be available for viewing by Professor Hoffman and his team and the Nord Anglia community worldwide.

Nord Anglia Education is committed to continue to offer amazing opportunities to all NAE student worldwide via Global Campus. Please see the STEAM with MIT Calendar for Term 3 Activities above.
