We have also been investigating our bodies. We started by looking at the basics through educating children about their bodies, and how to respect and care for them. This included the importance of taking care of cuts and scrapes as a way of keeping our bodies healthy and strong. We also examined the significance of disease-prevention strategies by nurturing basic habits such as thoroughly washing hands. We also discussed the limitations they experience when their bodies are not fully functioning as a result of an illness or injury. The children are beginning to understand the importance of sleep, rest, exercise and good nutrition to have a fit and healthy body.
These body discussions naturally led into deeper conversations about the physical structure of our bodies. The children were keen to understand and know more about their bones, muscles, heart, brain, lungs and skin. We investigated what happens to our hearts when we run across the playground, by firstly feeling our hearts at rest, and then again after exercise. The children understood that the increased heart rate is the heart working harder and getting stronger as it is a muscle. Learning about their bones required the children to use their imagination because bones cannot be seen by the naked eye. They had fun feeling the curved spines of each others backs and were fascinated to find out that muscles make our bones move.
We love science and now know so much about our bodies and how to be healthy.
