Our Early Years Curriculum: Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception

Here at The British School of Beijing, Shunyi, we want your child to be happy, safe and secure at all times, whilst we inspire them to become lifelong learners through our preschool curriculum.

Our Early Years Foundation Stage programme for children aged 18 months to 5 years of age is an excellent foundation for learning.

  • Reception student writing "will six cows fit in a car?"
  • Reception Student drawing on an interactive white board

We follow the revised British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework at our Beijing kindergarten, providing a curriculum full of activities, themes and real-life experiences that motivate children and provide a solid base for their future learning and development in Teddies Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception.

Children will be introduced to and given the opportunity to develop a range of language experiences beginning in EYFS, including Chinese and German.

Our EYFS curriculum is taught by our very experienced and caring teaching staff. Every EYFS classroom unit provides a stimulating environment that helps each child thrive by making exceptional progress from their individual starting points and, most importantly, being happy in their first school experience.

Discover through play

Play is the foundation of development and learning for young children. Your child will continue to participate in many indoor and outdoor play experiences as part of our preschool curriculum that will help them to learn while having fun.

Children learn in a variety of ways: watching others, talking, asking questions, listening, exploring and investigating through their play. In EYFS children are given the time and space they need to be masters of their own individual learning journey, with careful support and extensions being provided by our highly skilled teachers.

During their play and adult-led experiences in the classes, children are supported and encouraged to find things out and explore; to play with what they know, and be willing to ‘have a go’; to concentrate and be involved; to keep trying and enjoy achieving what they set out to do; and to have their own ideas, make links and choose different ways of doing things.

Our curriculum is further enhanced by celebration days, visitors, field trips, participation in whole-school events and parent involvement in special activities – all of which provide great learning opportunities for our youngest learners.

Learning within the EYFS curriculum

In the United Kingdom, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a framework for children’s development from birth to the end of the Reception year of primary school (0 - 5 years).

There are four themes within the EYFS curriculum, which we follow at our kindergarten in Shunyi.

A Unique Child - Every child is a competent learner from birth and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

Positive Relationships - Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and carers.

Enabling Environments - The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending a child’s development and learning.

Learning and Developing - Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. All areas of learning and development are equally important.

The EYFS curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning and development:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Mathematical development
  • Literacy development
  • Understanding the world
  • EAD - expressive arts and design

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We provide children with experiences and support which will help them to develop a positive sense of themselves and of others, respect for others, social skills and an eager disposition to learn. This area is of particular importance in the EYFS classes, as we intend to provide every child with a unique first experience of school in which they feel highly valued as an individual within the class.

Communication and Language
In order to enhance progress in every child’s command of language, children’s learning and competence in communicating, speaking and listening is constantly supported and extended through positive and sensitive interactions with highly skilled teachers in order to enhance progress in every child’s command of language.

Physical Development
The physical development of students is encouraged by providing them with opportunities for them to be active and interactive and to improve their skills of coordination, control, manipulation and movement. They are always supported in developing an understanding of the importance of physical activity and making healthy choices in relation to food.

Mathematical Development
We develop children’s understanding of maths in a broad range of real-life and play based contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practice and talk about their growing understanding.

Literacy Development
Children are encouraged to engage in a wide range of fun, multi-sensorial pre-reading, pre-writing and physical development activities, all of which will equip them with the skills needed to become confident readers and writers. Throughout EYFS children’s learning and competence in beginning to read and write is constantly supported and extended through playful activities, which shift to more formal teaching of skills at the Reception level.

Understanding the World

We help children to make sense of the world, through offering opportunities for them to use a range of tools safely; to encounter creatures, people, plants and objects in their natural environments; and to undertake practical experiments and work with a range of materials.

Expressive Arts and Design
Children’s creativity is encouraged by supporting their curiosity, exploration and play. For example, our pupils are provided with opportunities to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings, through a variety of art, music, movement, dance, imaginative and role-play activities, design and technology.

Tapestry Online Learning Journal

Tapestry is an online learning journal that we use to document your child’s learning throughout EYFS. You will find photos and videos of your child’s learning throughout the week as well as written comments from class teachers and teaching assistants. We welcome you to also share your comments about your child’s learning. In addition you can find next steps to support your child at home and you can share photos and videos of the activities they take part in after school and during the weekend.

You can access this through the website or download the app to your phone or iPad where you will receive instant notifications when new information is added. https://tapestryjournal.com

It’s a very valuable resource and we hope you enjoy experiencing your child’s learning journey with them.
