Year 4 have begun the year with a travel-themed topic! The children have been set a challenge to research, design and create their own information book on a given country. There are a range of countries being researched, including Brazil, India and Germany, and the children have been busy using books and iPads to research information that they can include in their book.
Alongside this, we have been doing some work using maps and atlases. We have learnt about lines of longitude and latitude, including the equator and the tropics, and the children have been able to identify countries that lie near these places. Earlier in the topic we discussed some of the features of non-fiction books, which included contents pages, diagrams, glossaries and indexes. The children made good use of the index this week when they were asked to locate some countries on an atlas and some of the countries were very tricky to find without the help of the index!
Over the next week or two the children will begin collating their research and start to think about how the final version of their book is going to look. The Year 4 teachers can’t wait to see the finished product!
