Marvellous Magnets

This week in Science Year 3 Macaws have been exploring the marvels of mesmerising magnets and their ability to attract and repel objects.

The children lead an investigation that posed the question ‘Is the strength of a magnet affected when a material is placed between it and an object’. They worked in groups to test this question, changing only one variable to ensure that it was a fair test – the material. It was great to see the children showing their collaboration skills, working together and supporting each other with the experiment.

As the experiment progressed, it was very impressive that the children also used their connection finding skills. They started predicting that as the material got thicker the magnet was affected more and more, until eventually it had no strength at all.

Overall this was a great experiment lead by the children and I am very impressed with the skills demonstrated and the ideas collected as a result. We will be using our results to write our conclusion in our next Science lesson.
