Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,
It has been a busy and exciting first half-term in the Secondary School. We have been delighted to witness how successfully our new students have settled in to every year group. Year 7 students have demonstrated tenacity and resilience as they have risen to the challenge of making the transition to the Secondary School. In Year 8 and Year 9, students have returned to school with a real focus on their studies and have involved themselves in a range of activities such as the school musical, sports events and the Student Council. In Year 10, students have made an excellent start to their IGCSE studies, demonstrating a more mature attitude towards their learning. Year 11 students have begun their final IGCSE year in earnest and it is great to see many of them using the library at breaktime and lunchtime to further support their learning. In Year 12, our new IB cohort has made an impressive start to the challenging programme and are now serving as brilliant role models for our younger Secondary students.
We have also been delighted to have a range of guest speakers visit the Secondary School this term. In September, we had a visit from Paralympian, Andy Barrow, who gave a key note speech to the Secondary School students and ran a variety of workshops with our Year 7 students. We also welcomed speakers from ‘Elevate Education’ to talk to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students about study skills and exam technique. Last Thursday, we were thrilled to host James Grime, the esteemed mathematician and code-breaker, who spoke to all of the Secondary Students about code-breaking, as well as giving a demonstration on an original Enigma machine from World War II.
Students have also had the chance to broaden their horizons through our trips and visits provision. A range of students in Year 7, 8 and 9 visited Microsoft to experience some of the new advancements in technology which are currently taking place. Selected students in Year 10 and 11 had an amazing experience of networking when they visited NUS-Yale for the ‘Women in Finance’ event, as the students were able to listen to and meet speakers from Bloomberg and Goldman Sachs. Our IB students have also experienced a range of visits, including to see microscopes at Nanyang University and a trip to the National Library to explore the range of materials they can access to assist with their studies.
We are also delighted to have appointed a range of student ambassadors this term. In September, we were able to announce the appointment of Y12’s Mithun Mukundan and Richa Deorukhkar as Head Boy and Head Girl and Year 11’s Siddharth Tuli and Indira Patel as Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl. The students are in the process of developing an action plan based around their key priorities for the year and will be launching some of their initiatives after the half term. Our Student Council has also now been relaunched with students from every year group represented. After their success with introducing lockers last year, we are looking forward to what exciting plans the Student Council has this year! Finally, we are now in the last stages of finalising House and Sports Captains and these appointments will be announced soon.
I enjoyed seeing so many parents at the Year 7 – 13 coffee mornings. High quality communication is a key factor in the success of our students and it was good to talk through our philosophy with those who attended. The level of positivity was hugely appreciated and your support and appreciation is important to all the teaching staff. The next part of this will be our Parent Consultation Evenings that will take place during the first week after half term for Years 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12. This is a great opportunity for parents to catch up with individual subject teachers to talk about progress. I strongly encourage you to attend and finalise bookings using the DCIS online parent booking system.
Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable half-term break.
Mrs. Heather Rinaldi
