Dyslexia Awareness Day, 5th - 6th October
Every year the British Dyslexia Association promote a week of information and activities to raise awareness of dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning difference, meaning people with dyslexia access information differently due to the way information is processed by the brain. This often causes some difficulties related with spelling, reading, writing and working memory. Despite such difficulties, people with dyslexia can excel in other areas involving creative and practical skills, needed for problem solving, innovative ideas and verbal communication.
This year the theme for the week is ‘Positive about Dyslexia’ and DCIS will support World Dyslexia Day on Thursday 5th October. Secondary students will be involved in different activities in their lessons, including simulations of the frustrations of reading and writing, and an in-depth look at some of the success stories of famous names across the world. Primary children will be learning what it is like to be a learner with dyslexia and they will be completing a range of activities and games in class.
In Secondary, there will also be a competition to create a piece of art work, film or writing, emphasising the positive attributes associated with dyslexia and increasing awareness throughout the school. In Primary, children will be asked to design a poster that reflects 'how different people learn'. Posters will be displayed in class with the winning poster being posted onto our website on Thursday 5th October.
To find out more about dyslexia, you can check out the British Dyslexia Association (BDA), Dyslexia Action and the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) websites.
James Grime Mathematician Visit and Presentation
James Grime, the esteemed mathematician, will be spending the day running presentations and codebreaking workshops with some of our Secondary students. James will also be bringing with him an original Enigma machine.
Parents can take part in this unique experience as we are delighted to announce that James is running a Parent Workshop at 4.30pm on Thursday 5th October, where he will present the Enigma machine and the mathematics behind it. This is open to all parents with children at DCIS. As we anticipate that this will be a popular session, click here to register your interest in attending this event.
British High Commission Travel Awareness Campaign
As holiday seasons approach, the Consular Section at the British High Commission in Singapore is undertaking an awareness campaign about British passport validity, with the aim of reducing the number of Emergency Travel Documents that are issued during the months of November, December and January.
Representatives will be at the DCIS Cafe next Thursday 5th October from 8.45am - 9.30am to present their Travel Awareness campaign. We invite DCIS families to come along to learn more and to collect a 'Passport Pack' which contains helpful information and tools to remind families of the date when passports need to be renewed. Lunch Service: Sodexo
As previously communicated the main cafeteria is not accepting cash payments, but the DCIS Café will continue to accept cash. Although, the cash facility in the DCIS Café is really designed to accommodate parents for occasional use, we recommend that all students are signed up for a Campus Online account. This limits cash on site and allows parents to track purchases that students make during the day through their Campus Online accounts. You can access the Campus Online page at this link.
For more information, please contact Sodexo at:

For the forthcoming UN Day on October 27th, DCIS asks that all students (and adults) wear an outfit that represents their home country.
