Welcome to academic year 2015

31 August 2015

Dear Parents,

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as Headteacher and welcome you all to the 2015 academic year.

From the outset I have been so impressed by the extremely friendly and welcoming atmosphere throughout the school. The strong sense of purpose and passion that students show towards their learning and the care they extend to one another are inspiring. This is so clearly a happy school and in this environment it is little wonder that students are ambitious, flourish and achieve so much.

I would like to extend a warm welcome back to our existing families and a particularly warm welcome to our new parents and students. I trust that you have had a very relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday and are now looking forward to the year of learning and discovery ahead of us at An Phu Secondary Campus.

Welcome to AP2!

The start of a new academic year is also an exciting time as the school community welcomes new teachers.  They bring with them a wealth of experience and skills to benefit students' learning and wider opportunities. I'm sure you will join with me in wishing the very best to our new teachers as they join the BIS community.

 New BIS AP2 staff 2015

Celebrations once again

We begin this year with BIS students celebrating outstanding IGCSE and IB examination results. They continue the trend of the last five years as these results are once again our best ever. We extend our warmest congratulations to these students and their families. Through their perseverance and hard work they are an inspiration to new and current students and add to their belief that they too can achieve great things at BIS. I would also like to take this opportunity to express thanks and appreciation to the teachers, past and present, whose commitment and excellent teaching have played such an influential part in this.

School Assembly encouraging perseverence

Our first school assembly was held earlier in the week when we reflected together on our shared and individual goals for 2015. In addition to our celebrations of BIS student successes we reflected upon the GCSE exam successes of  Malala Yousafzai, children's and education rights spokesperson and youngest ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. We considered the characteristics that we will commit to developing, including perseverance and optimism, that will enable us all to attain our goals this year. I was so impressed with the quality of thinking demonstrated by students during the assembly.

Parent communications

I strongly believe in maintaining good communication and relationships with parents and as the new school year gets underway I am very much looking forward to meeting you all as you visit the school or attend for the many planned events,  be they social, performance or academically related.  A calendar can be found in the  Secondary Parent Handbook. or on BIS Hub. Please take time for an introduction and conversation with me when you are here.

Parent Teacher Group

I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to join with the Parent Teacher Group (PTG) as often as you can.

      Coffee 1          coffee 2

It was a great pleasure to attend the PTG Newcomers Coffee morning (Friday) along with AP1 and AP2 parents and staff. My thanks to those new parents who joined us and enjoyed the opportunity to forge new friendships and connections in relaxed surroundings. My thanks to Maria Qemar (PTG Chair) and her team who provided a great start to the PTG year. The event reminded me why we place such a high value on the good work of this wonderful group of parents. The PTG is an extremely important part of how we achieve a strong sense of community as well as being a very effective network from which to gain advice and support when needed.   As a parent of two daughters new to BIS I have recent experience of the thoughtful, caring and genuinely warm welcome provided to us as a family joining the BIS community. There are several opportunities to enjoy throughout the year to suit all. I look forward to meeting with you at PTG meetings where I am happy to discuss aspects of the school’s work that is of interest to the group or the now famous wine and cheese evenings. Details of all upcoming PTG events can also be found on the AP2 PTG posts on BIS Hub.

Extra Curricular Activities

The Activities booklet is now available and is a must read for all families. You can download all of the campus specific booklets here. The extensive programme offered provides over 100 activities to choose from including several new activities which have been suggested by and will be led by students. Students are able to sign up for Term 1 activities using CHQ now. Guidelines for using CHQ are included in the booklet.

And finally...

I am looking forward to working with you all as the year unfolds but in the interim if there is anything you are unsure about do not hesitate to come and talk to me or another member of the PTG or Senior Leadership Team. Equally, if you have any suggestions for improvement, I'd be delighted to hear your views.
