Mr Carl Mincher - Weekly Update 4th September 2015

06 September 2015

As our existing students go the extra mile to support new students, great teaching and learning are to be seen in all corners of the school.

Dear Parents,

As our existing students go the extra mile to support our new students establish as members of the AP2 community great teaching and learning are to be seen in all corners of the school.  Our Year 7 students deserve particular congratulations as they have adapted very swiftly to the changes around them. I should also share my pride in the care shown as student-to-student support is very apparent throughout the school.  Our more senior students have been eagerly helping new students to meeting the practical challenges faced in the early days after joining AP2; helping find their way to lessons, mastering the lunch time system and encouraging participation in ECAs. All Year 7 students are now signed up for clubs which bodes well for this year groups' engagement in school life. I have particularly enjoyed the sight of sixth form students joining with Year 7 form groups and leading morning activities – the quiz run by Year 13 in 7H sounded challenging but great fun!

Learning beyond the classroom

Not all learning takes place in the classroom of course.  The ECAs will soon be providing an even wider range of enjoyable and challenging experiences above and beyond the timetabled curriculum.  Activity selection on CHQ closes at 5pm on Monday 7th September. Students will be notified of their chosen ECAs by Friday 11th September on CHQ and the activities begin on Monday 14th September.

Thank you to the Year 10 Geographers who invited me into their Mega Map (pictured) learning away from their normal classroom, in the auditorium for obvious reasons. These students were surprised by the sheer scale of the map and explained that exploring aspects of the geography of our planet whilst walking over it was truly engaging.

“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”  Haruki Murakami

Our library has undergone further refurbishment during the summer and has burst into life this term with the addition of around 2000 new books arriving on the shelves, many in response to student requests. Returning students and teachers have taken full advantage and nearly 700 books were borrowed in the first days of this term. There’s certainly a continued desire to read hardcopy at AP2 to complement our growing digital learning methods.

Parent Information Evenings

Thank you to all the parents of Year 12 who attended our information evening last Tuesday.  This informal gathering was an opportunity to hear about and discuss aspects of Sixth Form life, study and curriculum. We heard from the sixth form team led by Miss Binnington, Head of Sixth Form, and Mr Chandler, IB coordinator. This was followed by informal conversation with the sixth form IB and tutor team. If you were not able to attend on this occasion the Year 12 Parent Information Evening Presentation can be accessed here.

The series of Parent Information Evenings continue on Monday 7th September for parents of our Year 7, Wednesday 9th September for Year 8 and Tuesday 15th September for Years 9, 10 and 11. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during these evenings.

Wings to the mind and flight to the imagination

Plato put it that “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” Well there has certainly been a great deal of life to everything at AP2 recently with so much music to enjoy and applaud.  The recent lunchtime mini performance and instrumental demonstrations arranged by the Music Department added so much to the ambience of the undercroft.

Student Performance           If you are interested in learning an instrument at BIS, please see Ms Smith in room 200.

The many auditions for both Chamber and FOBISIA Orchestra taking place this week have reminded all here of the exceptionally high musical standards and the dedication and commitment of our student instrumentalists.

Our thanks and congratulations go to all music teachers and students involved.
