Parents’ Corner – 9/12/16

09 December 2016

As a preparation for what's coming next week, this week felt a bit quieter for TX parents. From last week’s BISzaar, to the upcoming Xmas Potluck, the  Xmas party at Thien Phuoc and more; everything you need to know is on the Parent group post.

  • 5

Like the 2 previous weeks, this parent update will start with a flashback, this time to last Saturday at the BISzaar with a wonderful update from APS PTG on the money raised. Then we'll turn to the future events, as the last week of the term has an exciting program for students, teachers and parents.

Looking back at the BISzaar :

The BIS community spent another fantastic day all together at the BISzaar. Games, craft, food, vendors, a book stall, a raffle, a mini tombola were among what was on offer that day. Lori, from APS PTG sent us this message to share with TX families:

« Dear TX Parents & Faculty                                                                                               On behalf of the planning team of the AP2 Parent Teacher Group (PTG) of the British International School (BIS) of HCMC; we wanted to share with you the overwhelming response and success we enjoyed at this weekend’s 2016 Christmas BISzaar.  The foundation of this success was clearly built upon the strength and generosity of our BISzaar sponsors and their reputations.  Word of the fantastic prizes shared to us by our sponsors for our Silent Auction and BISzaar Raffle spread throughout the community very quickly.  This excitement and momentum from the prizes drove event attendance to well over 1500 visitors and enabled us to maximise our fund raising efforts in three ways:

1)  Our Silent Auction generated nearly 100 million VND by the close of the bidding window!

2)  The PTG was able to sell over 1300 raffle tickets; doubling our sales vs. year ago!

And finally,

3)  Vendor Stalls for this event sold out in less than eight calendar days!

Early on, the planning team had set a goal to exceed the total funds raised versus the previous year; but we are humbled and thrilled to share with you that with your help we were able to raise just over 300 million VND (2.5x vs. year ago).  We are already looking forward to sharing with our aligned charities and community service partners this fantastic news!  Many thanks to the efforts on the BIS TX campus and by the TX Parent Community for your support of this event; raffle ticket sales on the TX campus alone were generous and exciting.  We hope that the TX campus enjoyed many raffle winners!

With sincerest appreciation for your consideration, time and donations-

Thank you from the Executive Committee and Planning Team

Indeed both TX parents and TX teachers did win a lot of prizes which included restaurants vouchers, a photography session, footballs etc.. The BISzaar was another opportunity to meet our « old friends » from TX. Thom, Suji and myself had a great time being « book sellers » for 2 hours at the PTG book stall.

Ho Ho Ho it’s almost Xmas :

He is back! And so is the Christmas Potluck which will be held on Thursday 15th December. For the newcomers who joined TX last August, we have two potlucks during the school year; one just before the Xmas break and one the week before school ends in June. The potlucks bring teachers and parents together for a delicious lunch. Everyone bring a dish to share (savory, no cakes ;).

We will meet at 11am in order to set up the room and lunch will officially start after a (small) speech from Mr Ian around 11.30/40 am.

The dress code is: red, green, shiny, you have to look « Christmassy ». If you have any Xmas t-shirts or sweat shirts, head bands, please wear them!

Thien Phuoc PTG Christmas Visit ;

Happening on the same day as the Potluck (but you’ll be back on time at TX) will be Thien Phuoc Xmas visit. The 2 PTGs from the 3 campuses will share this moment at the orphanage with the children. AT TX we have 13 spots available, already 7 are taken, so please sign up quickly if you want to be part of it:

Please find the schedule sent by Ms Clover :

  • 9.00am - Arrive at TP
  • 9.00 - 10.00 - play with children/hand out presents
  • 10.00 -10.30 - Help to feed the children lunch
  • 10.45 - Leave TP and return to BIS

Additional info : If you would like to bring any Christmas Presents then that will be very welcome! Any presents you think are suitable for children with disabilities.

Ideas for food to bring: Ice cream, jelly, sweets/gummy bears, juice, fruit (banana/watermelon only), cake (soft), hot dog, yoghurt.

There are 60 children who live at Thien Phuoc.

On behalf of the Parent group, 4 million VND of the money raised last March at the school fête, will be used to buy toiletries  for both children and staff as gifts. We may need some help to wrap the present before the visit, in that case, a message will be sent out on the WhatsApp group.

The Choir :

With now 22 singers the parent choir is a strong group. They’ve been practising hard and are more than ready to perform next week at the Xmas concert. I wonder what they are up too … it looks like the trend this Xmas is « socks with stiletto heels ». next rehearsal is this upcoming Monday. Don’t miss it if you are part of the choir.

A glimpse at ….

Today, Minori aka Our Creative Director, held 2 workshops. The first one was teaching APP Mothers how to make a paper rosette. The French group needs to make decorations for the global café happening next January. This year, so far, we are having more interaction with the 2 others campuses and it feels good to be able to exchange ideas, and skills.

At 1pm, Minori was with 5T for a spacial Xmas decoration workshop. Last year, she taught the students how to make their own beautiful Xmas tree ornament; this year, they’ll built the full tree :)

More pic to come on next week issue.

Coming next ; Parent morning coffee, PTG meeting and lunch:
  • Wednesday December 14th : "A thank you and International week feedback morning coffee" in the MPR held by Ms Mary and Mr Ian
  • Wednesday 11th January we will have the first coffee morning of term 2 called, “Happy New Year”.  During this meeting, Ms Mary propose that we begin discussing the TX fete, scheduled for Saturday 4th March. That date will come fast !

Have a great weekend, and come back ready for the last week of the term. It’ll be a busy one but certainly a joyful one.

Anne on behalf of the Parent Group.
