Mr Carl Mincher - Weekly update 18/03/16

19 March 2016

Dear Parents,

There are many occasions each week when I am reminded of the tremendous qualities and attributes our students hold - in this week's update you are able to read more of the Prefect Leadership training which was one of those occasions reminding us all of the privilege it is to play our part in educating young people of such high calibre.

The campus atmosphere has been electric this week as we have excitedly followed the progress of our FOBISIA teams competing in Hong Kong. The team performances have made us all so proud as you will read later in my blog. With only 3 weeks to curtain up the anticipation around our annual show is building too - the rehearsals are looking and sounding fantastic, the show already looks as though it will be a wonderful night of jazz and a huge sell out!

 U13 FOBISIA Games, Hong Kong

A fantastic effort by our Under 13 Fobisia teams in Hong Kong this week has given us all so much to be proud of. The team will be returning home with fists full of medals. We are so incredibly proud of each member of this special squad. Results for Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 on the Hub as well as on our Twitter feed which has kept us in touch with the action day by day.

My thanks and congratulations to the student teams and of course their teachers and coaches.

Prefect Training Day 12th March

Our Year 12 Prefect team spent last Saturday in training. As well as impressing all with their approach and commitment through their consideration of how to be effective communicators and leaders they gave us great confidence that we have another wonderful Prefect Team this year. Watch a video of their day and read their views on the training here.

UK University Fair Monday 21st March

The fair brings together 28 UK universities to discuss their programmes and institutions.

From 2pm to 2.40pm, Year 12 students will be invited to meet with the universities individually. From 3.15pm to 5pm, the fair is open to all members of the BIS community as well as the local community.  A great chance to find out how to get your child into a top UK University!

Year 10 University Assembly

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="305"]

Year 10 hear about the many benefits of attending the University Fair from Mr Aidan Crowley, University Guidance Counsellor[/caption]

During the week we’ve held a series of assemblies for years 10, 11 and 12 to promote the University Fair and the value of meeting admissions teams face to face drawing as much as possible from the opportunity. We hope to see many of our students benefitting from the guidance and information provided by our visitors on Monday. Please encourage your son/daughter to attend the public session and join us too if you can.

Student Leadership Presentations

In Term 1 Year 12 students took part in the Student Leadership Skills Programme which focused on practising and developing team work and the skills required to lead a team. The 10 sessions covered collaboration, empathy and listening skills, how to avoid groupthink, tackling difficult conversations, and how to chair meetings.

Sixth form leaders share “what it means to be BIS” through their presentation to Year 9[/caption]

In order to complete the programme, students were tasked with initiating, planning and delivering an assembly to another Year Group around the theme “What it means to be BIS”. Over the last few weeks these assemblies have been delivered to Year 7, 9 and 11, each with a different take on this theme. Year 7 were shown how the events that they have taken part in this year relate to our aide memoire. Year 9 considered the many ways to be ambitious. Year 11 gained valuable revision tips related to perseverance.

My thanks to the sixth form groups who led these thought provoking presentations, they caused all of us to reflect on the values and attributes we value most at BIS.

Parent Satisfaction Survey - Last Chance to Particpate

Thank you to those parents who have already completed this survey.  We are very keen to garner feedback from all our parents as it will make a real difference to how we run the school and plan for the future.  The online survey only takes 15 minutes and your responses are anonymous as we value your honest opinion.  Please note that the closing deadline for this survey is Monday, 21st March.  We look forward to and appreciate your participation.

AP2 Annual Drama Show

Each year the school puts on a full theatre performance, for which students in AP2 audition. This year's auditions have given us such an exciting cast.

There is always much excitement surrounding the annual production, this year is no difference, there is huge anticipation around their performance.  Rehearsals have reached fever pitch and tickets are now on sale for the performances which take place on the evenings of Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April at 7pm. Tickets cost VND40,000 each and are available from the AP2 reception. Tickets for these shows always sell out fast so please buy your tickets early.

So much Drama in Year 12

Year 12 are currently working towards a solo drama performance based on the work of a theorist of their choice. Lucy Stamm and Ben Bieri are exploring the work of Jerzy Grotowski whilst Thien is exploring the work of dancer Pina Bausch. Each student has created a short performance using the conventions of their chosen theorists. It has been wonderful to watch the risk these students have taken from Thien’s powerful dance on the school basketball court that represented the theme of possession, to Ben’s performance that focussed on Grotowski’s voice work which has no spoken words at all, just sounds. Lucy’s piece is exploring Grotowski’s actor/audience relationship and she creates a close and intense environment where her audience are put through their paces emotionally.

Science Academic visits AP2

On Tuesday we welcomed Louise Freeman-Parry, Principal Lecturer in Biosciences and Chemistry at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. Louise delivered a stimulating discussion about the multitude of career pathways available in the world of bioscience from biomedical science to tissue engineering and genetic fingerprinting.

Both she and members of the British Council were highly impressed with the quality of our students responses. In the future Louise said she would very much like to offer enrichment lectures to our students so they can gain an insight into undergraduate education in the sciences.
