Mr Simon Higham – Weekly Update: 04/03/16

04 March 2016

Dear Parents

This week at An Phu Primary Campus, 66 children have been ambitious in their thinking and working really hard finalising their Rube Goldberg designs. There has been great inventions, team work and creativity. The best part as an adult watching has been seeing the perseverance in the children. The AP1 groups are finishing their part of our school design and are looking forward to working with TX and AP2 students next week in joining their designs together.

This week, all of our children have been introduced to the Outstanding Learning Statements linked to Integrity. Children understand and integrate the attributes of Integrity, Respect, Care, Enquiry, Perseverance and Reflection of our Aide Memoire into their daily lives in school - but how do they really know what Integrity really means? This is where our Outstanding Learning Statements (see below) help to guide our children to make the correct choices.

I am honest and tell the truth

I choose to do the right thing

I am helpful towards others around me

I take on responsibility

Ask your children about the stickers in the back of their diaries that acknowledge great effort towards each of the attributes.

Good luck to all of our Year 4 and Year 5 pupils who set off on their residential trips next week. Also, good luck to Proud, Sean, Aarush and Linh who will represent AP1 in the FOBISIA Maths competition that takes place at the British International School, Guangzhou, in China. I am sure that everyone will gain a great deal from these unique experiences.

SISAC Cross Country Event

This week, 32 of our Y3 to Y6 pupils took part in the annual SISAC Cross Country run in District 7. Every runner tried their very best to win points for their team. Find out more about their successes and browse through the action photos by accessing the blog post by Mr Simon Grimshaw, PE Leader. Well done team - you did us proud!

Taking Safety Seriously

As part of our ongoing commitment to the highest possible safety standards across our school, the local fire department attended one of our preplanned, whole school evacuations. Take a look at the pictures of the fire truck and hoses in the post written by Ms Deirdre Grimshaw, Deputy Headteacher.

Term 2 Community Clubs

Our Community Club programme, continues to go from strength to strength by building upon the previous experiences gained in each term. The Community chess club that consists of BIS pupils and our visitors from Binh Trieu School have learnt the rules of the game and regularly battle it out to find the elusive 'checkmate'. Find out more about this club and also the Community Hula Hoop Club through the post written by by Ms Samantha Baker, EAL Teacher and Community Service Leader and Ms Lisa Sood, EAL Teacher

Year 2 Service Learning - Fun With New Friends

Continuing with a community theme, read more about how Year 2 have been making new friends and learning how to play effectively with others in this post by our Year 2 students, Daphne Shooter and Hannah Bown. The ability to communicate, empathise and give time to make a difference to the lives of others, is both a strong and unique feature of the learning opportunities that we give our children at BIS.

F2 - Darren's Special Birthday

On Monday we celebrated a leapling's birthday here at AP1. A leapling is a person who was born on February 29th which as we know only happens every 4 years.  Darren, from F2 was born on February 29th, 4 years ago so we were delighted to be able to celebrate his 1st (4th) birthday! Happy Birthday Darren!

 Antarctica Adventure at BVIS

To ensure that Vietnam is a great place to live for our children and for future generations, BVIS (British Vietnamese International School) have decided to champion and promote environmental issues in Vietnam. They are sending one of their Vietnamese teachers to join a high-profile international expedition to Antarctica led by Sir Robert Swan in March. Lan Cung, will be the pioneer and spearhead BVIS’ environmental efforts in HCMC, working very closely with our sister BVIS school in Hanoi, who are joining them for this project.

Read more about this spectacular expedition by reading the blog post from the BVIS website. Alternatively, follow the expedition itself through the project's webpage.
